In a post last year I gave you three recommendations for good podcasts I was listening to a lot at the time. It’s time to do it again! Here are three more podcasts which I play quite regularly and really enjoy. I hope you’ll check them out.
How I Built This with Guy Raz
My brother got me hooked on this podcast last summer when I was visiting with him and driving around to his STEM Camps in Ontario, trying to eke out some brother-sister time. How I Built This features host Guy Raz interviewing owners of well known companies such as Ben & Jerry’s, Wikipedia, Dyson, Clif Bar and Melissa & Doug about how they started their companies and the successes and challenges they’ve had along the way. Raz is a fantastic interviewer who genuinely seems interested and engaged in the stories of his guests. And the stories are fascinating! If you’re an entrepreneur with a large or small business – or even just a consumer – you’ll take something away from this podcast, the very least of which is a motivation to continue doing what you’re doing even when times may be tough. Inspiring.
Side Hustle School
I saw Chris Guillebeau speak here in Victoria this year at the SOHO Victoria conference and read his book Side Hustle after I received it with my conference registration. I really enjoyed the book and took a lot away from it even though my “hustle” is not on the side but full time. I started listening to his Side Hustle School podcast around the same time and what I appreciate about it is that each bite-sized episode is only about 10 or 12 minutes. They are great for short drives where I just want to listen to a burst of interesting and inspirational anecdotes about other entrepreneurs following their dreams – and making money doing it! Guillebeau has just passed his 500 episodes mark – they release every day – so there are a ton of episodes to dive into if you check this podcast out.
WorkLife with Adam Grant
I am a newer listener to this TED-sponsored podcast by organizational psychologist Adam Grant and I’ve been really enjoying it. Similar to Guy Raz, Grant’s voice and style are engaging and often make me smile. If you haven’t heard of Grant before, he’s a Wharton professor and author of the books Originals and Give and Take (among others), both of which I’ve read and found really valuable. In the podcast Grant takes a dive into work-related issues. In his words, he studies “how to make work not suck”. Even the ads on this show are a little different: one I listened to the other day was a really interesting profile of an “Autism at Work” program at JP Morgan Chase. If you love your work (like Adam Grant and myself!) and want to hear interesting stories about how “we can lead more creative, meaningful and generous lives at work”1, then WorkLife might be a good podcast for you.
So there you have it, three more podcasts to try. If you haven’t yet started listening to podcasts and don’t even know how to find them then you may find The Beginner’s Guide to Podcasts from Wired useful. (I listen to mine on the Podcasts app on my iPhone and hook it up to my car’s speakers while driving.) Enjoy!
