This year, our BCB team prioritized learning in areas that enhance our ability to design accessible, engaging, and inclusive learning experiences. Here are some of the highlights of what we engaged in:
Accessibility and Inclusive Design
- Participated in Editors Canada’s Plain Language Courses, including Plain Language International Standard and ISO and Pageside Manner, to refine communication clarity.
- Attended the Webinar: What BC’s Draft Accessibility Standards Mean For You to stay informed about emerging accessibility standards in British Columbia.
- Read The Inclusive Language Field Guide by Suzanne Wertheim to implement inclusive language strategies in learning materials.
Facilitation and Engagement Techniques
- Engaged in Liberating Structures User Group Meetings, exploring innovative facilitation strategies for fostering collaboration and creativity.
- Attended the Webinar: Priya Parker’s “How to Dream Up a Gathering You Actually Want to Host”, focusing on impactful and community-driven gatherings.
- Participated in the Trauma-Informed Pedagogy Session through MyFest, developing strategies for creating safe and inclusive learning environments.
- Completed a Webinar on Emotion and Immersion in Storytelling to enhance learner engagement through compelling narratives.
Cultural Awareness and Ethics
- Took part in the FLO Microcourse: Ethics of AI Images in the Classroom, addressing the responsible use of AI in education.
- Took the Home on Native Land course to deepen understanding of place and cultural context, informing culturally responsive learning design.
- Continued exploration of Indigenous-Related Learning, focusing on integrating Indigenous perspectives and approaches.
Professional Writing and Editing
- Advanced skills through SFU Editing Certificate Courses, enhancing expertise in editing and creating precise, learner-focused content.
