As facilitators of virtual meetings and learning events, part of our role is to intentionally design sessions to lay a foundation for people’s participation and engagement in the session. One of the ways we can do this is to incorporate what we call the “start before the start”. Open the virtual room early before the posted time of your event (after telling participants that you’re doing to do so and inviting them to it) and make space for some informal social time together before your session technically begins.

Not sure what to do in those precious opening minutes to begin to build casual connection with your participants? One idea is to invite participants to take part in a collaborative drawing activity in Zoom (or an equivalent platform) to begin to engage everyone in the room.

In this free digital resource you not only gain tips about how to set up collaborative drawing activities for your meetings and workshops, you’ll get more than 20 high quality nature photos for you that you can start using right away. This resource also includes suggestions about how to find other appropriate images as well as give you some ideas for other “start before the start” activities that you can use to mix things up.
