From Rapid Writing to Real Conversation: A Liberating Structures lab

This session is designed for anyone who hosts conversations and wants simple structures that increase participation and surface what matters quickly.
We’ll begin with Y x N Writing, a rapid-writing structure that uses open sentence stems to help everyone (individually) generate material fast—reflections, observations, questions, and possible actions.
We’ll then use Lean Coffee to turn what’s emerging into a focused, participant-led conversation. The group will propose topics, vote to prioritize, and use short timed rounds to decide when to stay with a topic or move on.
You’ll participate in both activities and we’ll also fly up to the meta level for each one, talking about what worked, what didn’t, and how (or if) you might use them in your own contexts. This 90-minute virtual lab is for anyone who wants to try out Liberating Structures in development and explore how they might work (or not) in real workshops and meetings.
Session details: This session will be held on Zoom. You will be sent a Zoom link the day before the event. (Please put it in your calendar when you register.) This session will not be recorded. Please register only if you plan to attend and participate.
Facilitator: Beth Cougler Blom is a facilitator and learning designer who helps organizations design and facilitate engaging learning experiences and meetings—both online and in person. Beth is the author of Design to Engage: How to Create and Facilitate a Great Learning Experience For Any Group and host of the Facilitating on Purpose podcast. Her new book, Everyday Acts of Facilitation, is expected to be available in April 2026.
