The BC Cancer Agency has been a client for the past several years and I’ve been happy to have worked with them on designing and developing both blended online and e-learning courses for staff and volunteers. I’d like to showcase, with their permission, a project that we just finished: the Orientation to Patient and Family Engagement.

Background: The BC Cancer Agency has made a commitment to involve and support patients and family members to engage with health professionals at the agency to improve cancer care. The program that directs this work is called the Patient Experience Program and they both work with staff who would like to engage patients and families in the work of the agency and the volunteer patients and families who would like to be involved in doing so. The agency came to me earlier this year to develop a short e-learning (self study) course for both staff and volunteers to learn more about patient engagement in order to create a shared understanding of what effective patient and family engagement looks like.

The Tool: We chose to use the content authoring tool called Articulate Storyline to create a visually appealing and interactive course. This is a powerful tool that I have been using with other clients and I love all the features it provides. It certainly feels like if we can dream it we can do it in Storyline.

Course Features: The course takes approximately 30 minutes for the learner to complete online. We articulated clear learning outcomes and made sure that we designed course interactions for the learner to lead them to achieving those outcomes.

Some of the features we built into the course (not in this order) are:

  • Click and reveal interactions
  • Very short videos of staff and volunteers
  • Drag and drop interaction
  • Matching game
  • Two scenarios
  • Quiz
  • Feedback/recap slides
  • Pause for reflection

I worked within the BC Cancer Agency brand guidelines (fonts, colour palette) and created the graphic master template for this course myself. The great thing about this is that now we have the “look and feel” for the agency pre-developed in Storyline if we want to create future additional courses together.

Additional Details: One of the fantastic things about the process of creating this course is that the BC Cancer Agency worked with patient and family partners at key points along the way. A small team of partners were consulted to give initial guidance on the project and they also provided feedback to both the design storyboard of the course (in Google Docs) and to the course itself after I developed it in Storyline. In this way the agency was able to “walk the talk” of engaging patients and families in the work of the agency – even when talking about how to engage patients and families in this orientation course!

For my part, I was thrilled to have worked with a staff person at the agency who was knowledgeable, organized, clear and respectful. We partnered well to create an effective and interactive course for the organization’s staff and volunteers – and actually had a lot of fun doing it!
